Pomegranate Apple Cider Sangria

TGIF! With Thanksgiving less than a week away, what better time to count your blessings, no matter how small? Friends and family, good health, beautiful autumn weather and, of course, another glorious Friday night (amirite?), are just a few.

Thanksgiving has always been the holiday for our family. Immediate and extended family, friends and new-comers all gather at our family’s river house every year without fail. It’s a casual, potluck-style lunch and we wouldn’t want it any other way. All the staples are there each year: chicken and dumplings, potato salad, pork and rice, fried turkey and my Papa’s famous “camp potatoes.” Up to 100 people (for real) chat by the camp fire or mingle around the camp yard sipping sweet tea (whiskey optional). When it’s time to eat, we all join hands in one big circle by the river bank, count-off and sing “Shall We Gather at the River.” I am not sure who started that tradition, but every since I can remember, that is what we do. It’s such a special moment for us all to slow down and simply be together.

With fellowship comes great food and drinks, of course. I have slowly but surely become the “drink connoisseur” of the family. (Although I can’t imagine why…teehee). So, with great pleasure and much alcohol, here is a fresh and fruity recipe to share with your family during this holiday season: Pomegranate Apple Cider Sangria! Let’s do this…

Pomegranate Apple Cider Sangria

  • Servings: 8
  • Difficulty: Easy

1 1.5 liter bottle of Pinot Grigio

1/2 cup peach Brandy

1 750 ml. bottle of sparkling apple cider

1 pear cut into matchsticks

1 lemon, sliced

1/2 cup pomegranate arils

Cinnamon sticks for garnish

Slice up one lemon and cut one pear into matchstick shapes.

Toss the pomegranate arils along with the lemons and pears into a pitcher. Pour in the Brandy and Pinot Grigio and give it all a stir. Let the sangria chill in the fridge overnight to let all those lovely flavors mix and mingle.

How gorgeous are those colors?

When ready to serve, top off the pitcher with the sparkling apple cider to add a bit of fizz. Pour the sangria over ice and don’t forget to add some of that delicious fruit to your glass! Top off with more sparkling apple cider as needed.

Garnish with a cinnamon stick to add even more fall flare and drink up!
